One of the major developmental biology challenges remaining is to obtain general principles and mechanisms that can be used to explain the development of different organs. An increasingly used approach to integrate diverse developmental data is through computational modeling. Whereas models are useful to logically bring together information from different organizational levels (molecular signaling, gene networks, physical properties of cells), increasing the realism of a model to account for a single organ may limit the explanatory power in other organs. Therefore, we aim to build general but realistic models to account for diverse epithelial organs.
